Learning of Life

A friend of mine Jenny Chawla asked on her wall what’s more important in life- family, friends, or goals?

I clearly said, Goals.
Because I remember once upon a time it was my board exams, I used to take classes from one of my favourite professors. A few days before my final exams, my Bua had arrived Indore so I asked my professor to allow me to meet her. She’ll go the same evening. But he did not let me, I got really disappointed by that gesture.
Later on he explained, Sumit things like, meeting your people, throwing or enjoying a party is far easier than chasing your goals. If you’re focused towards your goal, and be something someday, then your people will specially come to meet you because they will, by then, your priorities comes first towards your self, towards the society.
I still apply that learning in my life. 🙂

PS – Here I’m not mortifying the importance of family and friends in our life over goals. But if you’ll see outside then you’ll find how people have wasted their precious time for no reason.

You might say, there are hardly any people but I say there are loads of. I know a lot of them.

Making time for your people always comes first but one should also mind if you’re less motivated towards your goals in life then even your own people will curse you.

Hence a perfect balance is all required in life. Eventually that’s life teaches us.

  1. A well reasoned argument…I really appreciate and understand your perspective…goals are very important, and you were sure to include that there needs to be balance between goals and spending time with loved ones/others….and, focusing on yourself. I really enjoyed this post…as I do all of the ones I’ve read….thanks for sharing….always interesting and a privilege 🙂

    1. That’s a great response I got from you that you understood my perspective. Because the most important thing is that only. People have different set of mind and priorities too.

I might think this way because I’ve always grown up thinking about doing something of my own (people call it entrepreneurship these days) so for doing that one need to be focused.

But I’m so glad that you found it worth and gave your suggestions in it. Thank you so much. 😃

  2. ‘Balance’ is the key. And priorities are always relative. We have to learn to take well reasoned decisions quickly. Because at times moment is what all matters. Choosing what over what. That is when you have to figure out the priority, which is relative to situations. So there couldn’t be a final answer.

I regret one time when I prepared for a silly unit test in a school instead of meeting a cousin whom i was seeing after two years. But I am glad that I didn’t waste my time hanging out during my 5 precious university years that were important for pursuing my goal. So you see, there’s never an absolute answer to this question.

  3. I think your teacher was a perfect guide in his advice.A goalless life with family and friends will not become meaningful and give any satisfaction to the soul.It is only when we have a goal and we try to reach it, and may be lose or win in our efforts, we feel our worth. Well written,Sumit. Indeed a food for thought for everyone.

  4. Goals are the forces that drive one through his/her life. Goals are like the air you breathe. If you don’t have any, you are like a live walking corpse.
But as it is said – Keeping the balance is the key. We need to learn how to keep that key safely because if we loose it we are going to regret it, in the long run.

  5. True , prioritizing is really important we’ve to choose between what’s important and what’s a necessity. I’d say when it comes to prioritizing and our family and friends are important but realising the dreams and accomplishing our goals is necessity ,because we set them we dreamed of them now we can’t let go of them until we reach some conclusion because for me it’s really something very personal it’s like do or die with the relatives like mine if accomplishing my goals and realizing the dreams I’ve seen is the only option I have its the only proof, I have that I’m just going the unconventional way and there’s nothing wrong about it, it’s a necessity. 🙂

  6. What is life about?

Years have seemed to pass like seconds. A familiar face in the market has brought back all the nostalgia and memories. Days turn into nights and weekends turn to weekdays and we work on and on , like machines , grinding against the noise , to support ourselves and the ones we hold dear. But have we ever stopped for a single minute, to not do anything, to just breathe , to just be?  The years have taught us a great many lessons , we have laughed , we have cried , we have feared , we have felt joy , sadness ,anger ,betrayal and loss , euphoria , madness , relief , jealousy and every other emotion on a spectrum . We have traveled , met people, felt lonely , connected with people and the internet , listened to people, listened to songs, got a new haircut , read things , wrote things and talked. But ever have we introspected ourselves, our emotional growth and our soul’s whispers? Have we ever really asked ourselves what is it that we really want , what is it that we are here for? Have we ever told ourselves that life isn’t about materialistic things and cars and jewellery, technological devices and watches ,rather,Its about making people smile , being there for others and for ourselves. Its about dancing in the rain , counting the clouds with a six year old. Its about long walks and late night talks. Its about the people we meet and connect with. Its about helping and being a shoulder to cry on. Life is all about the summer and the sweet smell of it.

  7. Wow! Your post is brutally honest. Yes, there has to be a balance between your goals and your family but it is easier said than done. Though we all strive for that balance. Nice work.

    1. I guess, that is the motive of our life, Gul to do everything in limits and with balance. Anything which crosses the limit will be harmful for the relationship. 🙂

Thanks so much Gul for the lovely view of yours. 🙂
