Before this year I really did not know what Diwali actually was. But as I have continued on my spiritual journey by reading more and more good books on spirituality (recently I’ve finished Happiness Unlimited by Brahmakumaris) and experimenting life, I am learning more and more as the days go by.
In Hinduism, Diwali is known as the Festival of Lights. It symbolises the victory of good over evil. Light overtaking dark. Many celebrate by cleaning house and setting diyas (lamps, lights, or candles) inside or outside of the home. Some may celebrate by wearing a new outfit. The family also participates in Puja to Goddess Lakshmi. She is the Goddess of wealth and prosperity.
To me, Diwali is all about renewal and bringing forth light. After a particularly challenging year, I really was able to connect to celebrating this holiday. The overall symbolism and beauty is what captivated me. I lit a few diyas around my house and prayed for positivity in my every day life.
It was a delighted evening of Diwali on 11/11/2015. I was sitting along with my family and moments ago my cousin along with his wife came to our house for greeting Diwali. After around 5 minutes what I heard is a sound where one of my another cousins came inside the room and said,
“There’s a naked lady who just entered in our neighbour’s house and lying skittishly.”
I was like what the hell, let me go and see the whole matter. When I went outside of my house, what I see is bunch of people standing (most of them were from our colony only, and few were outsiders).
So, in the beginning I didn’t take it seriously, because I was happy to know that some of the aunties from the colony gathered together with handful of clothes, came closer to that lady and dressed her up. I thought she’ll be alright now. But what I saw was, she slept again after wearing those clothes, everyone was like,
what’s wrong with her?
The next reaction of people I could observe was, get the hell out of her ( this is the only weakness of a few people who has money to flaunt but don’t have humanity in themselves )
Anyways, even till than I wasn’t that much affected, I thought something bad must have been happened with that lady, I prayed to my God to bless and help her. Because being a man, I can’t go there and help her physically.
It was shocking for me when I came to know that something is coming out from her mouth, it was white fizz, not mucus but something which we see in movies after having a poison. I was tensed by now.
I thought, there are more than 100 people standing here, police has arrived too till then but the strange fact is none of them called an ambulance. I was literally felt so helpless that even if I want I couldn’t do anything, then something struck into my mind, I took out my phone, dialled a number which everyone was afraid of dialling, it was 108, a helpline number for an ambulance.
All of a sudden I called up, talked to an executive, first and for most I asked him did anyone register a complaint regarding a lady in this (my) area? and the answer was shocking for me. Nobody has given a single shit to call up and bring an ambulance for that lady. Anyways, I speak to him for like 8-10 minutes, expalined him and he said, it’ll take around 40 minutes to reach at your place, and I was like what the fuck, when will you reach, when she’ll be no more?
I want an ambulance in next 15 minutes anyhow, I said. As I emphasis on providing an ambulance immediately he made me connect to the ambulance driver I requested him to come as soon as possible and he was consented. At the same time when I was standing behind few policemen talking to their head police at control room. I overheard them saying,
‘Sir ambulance ko aane me to 50-60 minutes lagenge’ (ambulance will take around an hour to reach here)
I immediately raised my voice and let them know that I talked to ambulance’s driver he’s about to come in 10 minutes. And even that constables were happy to know that someone is there who’s worried for this lady, when I heard two uncles from my colony(whom I hate for their behaviour)tried to stop me by letting constables know the current updates. They said to me,
‘Chhod na tu, kaha ambulance ko bula raha hain jaane de inko, leke ja rahe hain to le Jane de ( you leave it, why are you calling an ambulance, when they are ready to take her with them)’.
I was genuinely disappointed after hearing that, I thought to myself, will they say the same thing when something happen to any of their own family members?
Yes, They will give these kinda fuck to their own people too, I guess. After 5 minutes the ambulance arrived.
I thank God, for sending it on the right time. Even after being the little in front of all, I took the responsibility that I called, if anything happens please do give me a call. I am responsible for that lady but please first take her to the hospital and get her some treatment.
In this auspicious day of Diwali, I’m thanking God for make me this much mature where I could see the difference between what is right and what is wrong.
At least, I could to something for that lady in her need, at least, I would be able to sleep well in nights. At least, I would not regret of not helping someone where I definitely could have. At least, I’ll feel proud standing in front of the mirror.
People might laugh at me because they think I’m different, but I laugh at them because I know they all are bloody SAME.

Fatma, how should I thank you for saying such heavy words. I have never imagined myself changing the world, but all I did was listened to heart and soul. I’m glad that I could do what others not even tried to.
I’m overwhelmed with your words Fatma. I just want to thank you for knowing me through my words.
May God bless you Fatma. 😇

There’s nothing new thing I did Shreya, it is our responsibility to do, when we see something isn’t going the way it should go, then someone has to raise a voice. I just did what my soul allowed me to.

And really happy to hear that you could do such a humane deed on the day of Diwali..glad to hear that there are people like you who think differently from the crowd..because they have no right to tell us to change unless they are thinking the right way..hats off to you!! God bless you!
Is that lady alright now??

First of all I wish you a happy Diwali Chithra.
Exactly, this is what I had thought when this situation arrived. Everyone talks about the change but nobody, not even take a single step to make the change. This is not me who helped that lady, it was God’s grace which made me do that. And I am really grateful for my soul that it still has that power to listen to my inner voice out of all the noise.
I am also grateful that I could gather that power to write this thing in front of you all. That lady was a starnger, I am not in contact with her, but I hope she must be in good condition now. 🙂
I am elated to read your comment, Chithra. .

It is my pleasure dear Sumit..it is a good feeling to our souls despite of who the other person is we are saving..the time has already elapsed to ask ourselves that would we react the same as the crowd did, if the same incident would have happened to our beloved ones!! But we should evaluate what we are before restricting a good soul from extending a helping hand..whatever response that came out of you was your soul’s magnanimity and virtue..we all should get inspired of this.

What you did on that night defined you as a man and a truly human being. To follow one’s heart rather than following the crowd takes courage…and what a perfect day to have performed this kindness. Your own light shown. It was fitting.
I remember many years ago when living in New England (US) where I had a number of friends who celebrated Diwali. They explained the celebration to me and invited me to their home. On that first occasion, I painted a picture of a single lit diya, fashioned from Hindi lettering (I can’t remember what it was) for my friends. It was simple, but they made me feel very appreciated.
I may be late, but I wish you, “Happy Diwali” anyway!

I guess, I have nothing did something great. It was supposed to be everyone’s nature. Isn’t it?
But the irony is everyone around us are completely hypnotised by the kind of life they are living. They can’t see what’s going around them, if they see somethhing bad, they will just avoid it.
I really could not do that. That is the only difference. 🙂
What do you know about Diwwali? 🙂
That is really amazing. I wish this time you must have made something too. no? I wish you a happy Diwali too 🙂
Thank you for commenting 🙂

Sorry it took so long to respond to your comment. I agree that it seems mankind has been conditioned to forego simple human compassion and are not even aware enough to realize it has happened.
I know that many cultures celebrate a Festival of Lights and that at the core of each is the acknowledgement of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, hope over despair and many times celebrates the love and compassion in human relationships and ‘fresh beginnings’ with many prayers offered. The Asian celebrations of Tet are much the same. I think they are glorious celebration to witness, especially when the celebrants take the time to reflect.

The Asian celebrations of Tet are basically the same and even the Jewish Festival of Light, although celebrated for a different religious basis, acknowledges “light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil and hope over despair”.
But regardless of cultural differences, the Festivals of Lights are glorious to witness and a blessing when invited to participate 😌

You have shown this westerner the true meaning of Diwali. Most people in a crowd will not act, as they think others who know better will. In this case you were the one in one hundred who did know better! As Ghandhi said – be the change you want to see in the world …

That is rightly said Sir!
It is not that people are not aware of what is happening around, the only problem is nobody wants to take a step to raise their voice against wrong.
People have set their mentality, they wanna live this life in the worst scenarios.
I am glad that you quote Gadndhi ji. I am agree with that. Thank you for your kind words 🙂

I’m glad that I was pretty sure for what and how I wanted to help, today when I’m 23 why do people behave in that way, because they’re more concerned about what people will think about them. Their so called Maturity is of no use.
I’m glad to become immature at this and for all the upbringing my parents has giving me.
