Book Number 12: Deep Work by Cal Newport

It has been a long while that I have not posted any book reviews and summaries. Not that I get paid for doing that, but just to keep everything documented. Here’s an informative post about my recent read.

Book number: 12

Book name: Deep Work

Author: Cal Newport

Book Length: 304 pages

Time taken to read: April 29, 2020 – May 1, 2020

Genre: Self-help

After a Long Time with the Review

Also, I am asked by a lot of people for a book recommendation and it is not practically possible to remember all the time about the learnings and stories of a book.

As National Poetry writing month ended yesterday, I thought of posting my further journey. Lately, I have been reading a lot of different books and stuff of the Internet due to lockdown.

The Deep Work Story

Let’s now talk about the book now. This is actually one the great book so I have found because it doesn’t support multitasking. Yes, you heard it right! We all have been hearing about having the capability of doing multiple things together and ended up with nothing great. Those things will not have 100% attention. If we look at the history, Steve Jobs or J K Rowling used to use this technique of Deep Work. They would go to some silent place and do their work with full attention to it, and that is how Microsoft came, and that is how Harry Potter became the success.

You see how they kept their focus on one thing and ended up becoming pro at it. This book completely talks about that. I remember one of the incidences of my office when I used to create attractive marketing content for WhatsApp and keep on sending messages to my prospects with full the attention of each, as WhatsApp has the limit of only sending up to 5 people, and I always used my official WhatsApp on a PC, it took me hours to reach thousands of people. Once I was in the office till 10:10 pm whereby the leaving time is 7 pm.

Conclusion? The next morning there would be a new lead awaiting me, I’d call them up and the sale was done. I realized it now, it was nothing but my Deep work technique which I used by giving my 100% attention to my work. That is the power of Deep work.

Two types of Work Pattern

Shallow Work:

That kind of work which will always keep you busy but will not be always productive.

Example: Talking to a friend while doing some work, listing to music while doing household chores, or chatting while sitting with other people, scrolling on social media, checking out mails.

Anything that distracts you easily, which decreases your productivity and increases the wastage of time. All in all, multi-tasking will lead you to have a shallow working pattern, these will always be there even if you spend hours on them.

Deep Work:

Any work that you perform and have its full attention will be considered as Deep work. Just try to keep your focus on one place and it will lead you to have its importance. I have tried this method lot of times, being in sales profile I get frustrated at times, and to get rid out of it, I need some alone time, so I take a break and go to some park where I can have the solitude I need for my soul, the chirping of birds around, tree leaves making calm sound and I write. I feel good again.

There are 3 kinds of people who will survive after this lockdown

Since this is a global pandemic and all the economies are down and for now it is important to secure ourselves by having the power to deep work. There are three types of people:

  • People who are rich and already financially secured
  • People who are good with technology
  • People who are Experts in their field.

We need to understand that if we keep on doing the work which everyone is doing for years, don’t you think we can be replaced anytime? If not by people, then surely by machines and robots in the coming time. The only thing which will protect is the uniqueness of an individual.

4 Methods of Deep Work

  • Monastic Approach

In this method, you try to become a monk, leave everything behind and go for the work that needs to be done.

  • Bimodal Approach

In this approach you get to have a balance of monastic and shallow working.

  • Rhythmic Approach

In this method, you try to create a particular habit of doing the work.

  • Journalistic Approach

In the journalistic method, you do a particular work when you get the time and have the focus on that until it is done. For instance, if you don’t get the time to read while working then you can utilize the time.

Recommended to: Anyone who is eager to work on him/herself for the personal growth.

Inspired me to learn about:
How doing less things can also make us more productive.

3 Takeaways from the book:

  1. When you look for the change, see the people around who are already pro at doing that.
  2. Sometimes, it’s not always big changes that you need to make, but a little change will make the big impact.
  3. Summarizing the entire crux, there were a lot of things I have been doing but wasn’t aware about it till now.

  1. I was just about to ask you- that why haven’t you made the second post yet.. and here you are…

I really appreciate your effort to let your readers know about the book.
Those minute details you give about everything makes us to dive deeper to see what is there ahead..
And you never fail to share with us instances from your personal experiences.
I mean this one in which you told as that you’re working till 10:10 and then how you achieved what you wanted… It just makes me feel like I am listening to you sitting right in front of you. It is more narrative.
And believe me or not I am your fan. And you know sometimes looking at your knowledge, I have a vibe that you have a long way to go. You’ll surely achieve whatever you want from life by looking at the kind of dedication you have. This book you completed in days..I mean wow and how? Okay I know how…

You are too good. And then when you said everything else that is unproductive, you cut it from your schedule because you wanna be more productive.
    Massive respect Man…

I am just so lucky to have met you. I say it with all honesty…
More and more love to you..💛

    1. See you were about to ask and here I am with a post.

It cannot always possible but as you always day we’ve got wonderful people’s back with us and that someone is putting efforts to read them then it is worth putting efforts from my side.

I actually wrote, made the concepts clear, made me easy to understand, created charts on MS-Word and here it goes with an appreciation from you.

Did you like the way I put the backstory of my experience? I like to do because that’s why I can be assured that this is possible. This is actually a fact. This almost happens with me when I read any self-help book, I’ve been kept on doing those things, and when I read I be assured again that I am on the right path.

Thank you for all the love, Rashmi. Your words mean much. ☺

      1. You still doubt me.
Nowadays I am so certain about what’ll come next…
And yaa it would have been good if you completed the statement rather than making me to complete it…

      2. We’ve all had our good and bad experiences in life. And that’s what make us human, isn’t it?

        Today’s topic should be:

‘Write about something you failed at’

    1. Hain na? If you’ll my older posts na toh you’ll get to know I was a descriptive writer only earlier.

I was not at all a poet who’d rhyme like this.. I just started doing that as a filler. Yes, that’s true. Because I’d not have any other ideas to write about so I’d write poetry or prose and post here.

That’s how this journey has started.

That’s such a good thing to know that other than the learnings, you could focus on the efforts I put to made those smartcharts, I wasn’t even knowing how to make them, so I watched it on YouTube, and then did it. Hahah! How dumb of me to not know that.

Thank you so much for your always inspiring words, Anushka. 🙂

    1. I do. And many of the times I get a lot of scoldings from my family because every month I buy at least Rs 1000 books minimum. And this concludes 10-15K spending on those books.

I don’t like pirated ones, and the original costs double and triple of it. But I can’t read duplicates. 🤷🏾‍♂

    1. Hey, Zainab! Firstly, thanks for stopping by and loving my content. I’m glad that my summary/review of the book did motivate you to read this book. You’re gonna love it.

There are a few things you can work (Telling you on the basis of the same book’s learning for you) on:

      1) Always respect your work and be more present.

      2) Be Active. It’s not just blogging but an investment of your time, learnings, and networking.

      3) Always be profound and accurate about your thoughts and pen them down honestly.

      4) Always apply Deep Work methodology in your blogging for whatever you write. Write. Post. Give importance to people who come and leave their comments. Reply all of them and read their works too.

      5) Last but not the least, be consistent.

      1. I don’t know if I understand it right, I not very good at english lol. Still learning hahaha.

I’m talking about the Steve Jobs part, or are you reffering to when bill stole idea from apple? Or some history I’m not aware. Hahaha

      1. Oh really, that’s nice. I do like our history, how we achieved our independence and other stuff but what I do hate is the people. They have too much opinions, they don’t follow the law, and their crab mentality.

And another thing that I hate is the weather, it’s too hot here. If we happened to be in the north part of the world where there’s snow, I might have liked this.
