The Story of A Beggar Girl: A Poem

She was neither a grown up woman
Nor a little infant who can be
used in the imploring business.
Preferably, she must be in
Her adolescent.
Standing beside the savory snack shop,
Right in front of my car
Where it was parked.

It was a mid-May and
Summer full of hotness all around.
I found her sitting and chewing something.
She must have received from someone.
I found her eyes into mine,
She looked deeply, as if she’s telling me a story of hers without even a word.

I was inside the car,
She stood up and dusted off her cloths.
I squint through the dust from the glass
to see what she’s brought.

I looked into her eyes again.
They were deep. They were shining.
I opened the windshield, and got to know it wasn’t the money which she was asking.

I was awestruck that I kept staring at her from top to bottom.
I was sitting inside the car. Still.
I looked and asked, “Do you want some money?”
“No money”, she replied.

She’s the same girl whose photo I had taken this morning. Can you see the vibrant happiness in her eyes?

I found a bunch of packed napkin tissues in her hand,
and asked if she wants to sell it to me?
She denied.
I was curious to know what’s that
thing she wants then?
She made a sign of thumbs up
followed by taking it to her lips.
“Water?” I asked.
And in her response, she nodded. “Yes.”

I smiled, and looked around
To check if I have one.
I handed her the
bottle from the car can,
and smiled back at her.
She went back to where she was sitting,
She sat, opened the cap, drank water from the bottle,
Looked at me and again smiled.
I found those eyes sparking now.

In a moment or two, the beggar’s mother came
With a baby girl along her side,
She asked the girl if she’s got any money yet
She showed her a few notes of Rs 10 and and some coins in her little hand.

She looked down and lifted
A half packet of chips maybe,
what was eating,
In the time like this pandemic this is how such people are unfortunately keeping.

Lastly, the little baby sat on the street and started eating the food,
And her mother’s eyes met with mine
She begged from where she was stood.

Hey, everyone! I hope you are all doing amazingly great at your place. And of course, safely spending your quarantine too.

I had a different experience today. I almost went out after almost 50 days of Lockdown and as everyone is aware Mumbai is in a Red zone area so the cases of Covid-19 are rapidly increasing here.

But still with all the precautions, I stepped out of the house because somehow I was frustrated at home with work from home and the same schedule.

I went out for 3 hours out of which I spent with the driver across the streets of Ghatkopar, Mumbai. I looked at the beautiful trees, lesser people, closed shops, clean roads, and peace around me. It was such a beautiful experience.

At the same time there was something giving me uncomfort feeling about the girl I saw begging. She wasn’t even begging. It was more than that. I hope you must have read the poem and understood my emotions for how I felt.

Today, by giving a water bottle to that little girl I felt proud of myself, yesterday someone asked me for some money and I transferred it without even asking when he’ll be giving me back. I guess, I’m at that level of my age where I have understood the real wealth is not how much money do I have in my bank account, but how generous and human I am towards the humanity around me. I hope each one of us do whatever best we can to protect and secure the life of people who need us. 🙂

  1. What a heart-touching experience. I can understand how you must be feeling. It must be an outburst of mixed emotions – happiness, gratitude, helpless, proud all at once. Sumit, I am really glad you noticed that little girl and the sparkle in her eyes! We really need humanity and the sense of helping others first. Very well penned.

And yayyy! you finally moved out. I am still stuck. Hopefully after 17th atleast I can go for a walk downstairs. It must have been a different feeling to be driving the car on empty roads after such a long break.

    1. Hi, Nanchi! I really felt good yesterday for going out. Not only because I could see a lot of things after almost 2 months, but I could find the inspiration for what’s going around. I guess, that’s all of us, as writers, do, right?

I did help her in a way and took a picture of hers without even thinking if I’ll ever write about it. But I did. I’m elated with the fact that even if can make each one of us be kind towards someone who’s helpless, we can be internally happy with such kind act. I felt that happiness.

Absolutely, you should go out after May 17. You’d not feel it’s the old world, everything is new, I could not find anything old.
There were a lot of things I found interesting. I’m excited for you to go out so we get to read your experience again. Haha!

  2. I just can’t get the girl’s eyes off my head. They truly were so sparkling, haha. 🌟 Your kindness and love just melts my heart. This was so heart warming to read. But at the same time, it’s really disheartening how the poor people have to survive in such conditions where they don’t even have water to drink. 😣 What havoc has this disease caused to our people! I hope things get better soon.

You pleeeease take care of yourself. This post and all is good, but I’m so angry at you. 😤 Kya bola tha maine haan? Ghar se nahi nikalna. And see! Mask bhi nai lagaya aapne. 😑

    1. Hain na? They’re amazing. Firstly, I thought it’s my photography but I was wrong. Haha!

You’re absolutely correct, Chandu. In a city like Mumbai, it’s even more dangerous.
I really hope too that this gets over before it takes thousands of more lives.

I knew you’d scold me for this, but believe me I had my mask on, it was just for the photo I removed nah. Sacchi!

  3. happiness in her eyes was the first thing I noticed Sumit and then later found you too wrote about it.How amazing it is to notice things normally people wouldn’t bother about but a kind heart will always see someone who need them.
I know how you might have felt after meeting her, it’s a weird lump in the throat and wandering thoughts about her.I know we have our limitations but so proud of you as a person, you are doing your best.
Take care if yourself too ❤

  5. Good morning sumit,
This poem is emotional one. I can feel each and every words of yours. This pandemic made people’s life worse. Hope to get better situation soon.As always you beautifully penned the poem. You’re being very talented to write about anything around.
Yeah, the little girl’s eyes were sparkling. You said her eyes look deep into your eyes and she didn’t ask for money. But she got something more from you worth than money. The world is so busy always, we don’t have time to look at people who stay on streets, they were completely isolated often.when you give a peek on that little girl she got some concern Sumit. Your smile may brought happiness to that little soul. It’s a big thing for a child to get concern look from a stranger, what could a child do? Your attention towards her gave smile on her face. Literally you made her day. With that happiness she didn’t ask for money from you. What else be more worth than little kindness?
Life is more than money, not just money can bring satisfication to our lives. Humanity and kindness is the basic elements she proved that yesterday.
Stay safe and stay happy 🙂

    1. Good afternoon, Mitty!

This was surely an emotional scene for me while observing everything yesterday.

I’m glad that you can find out my other areas of writing too, as many people in my real world has given me a tag of Erotica Writer (Although, I don’t feel shy or shameful for being called that either. Once my AVP had asked me in the feedback interview what do I write about, and my answer was sex. He got impressed with my openness about a thing which people usually don’t even talk about) but yes, I don’t write anything forcefully it needs to push me with it’s originality. And yesterday’s even just did it effortlessly.

Truly, I felt the need of doing everything I could. I was putting my hand in my pocket to give her the money, but all she wanted was a priceless water. I’m thankful to God for making me capable enough to help someone in their bad times.

Thank you for reading thoroughly and always share your wonderful views.

      1. Indeed sumit there is nothing taboo in art. An aesthetic mind can express filth into beautiful thing. You’re great writer either it’s erotic or not, Your words are always beautiful. Somehow the person, who loves art will be more genuine and so you are.
God blessed you with great heart. I can visualize your feel about helping that girl.
Keep doing it.. After all humanity should grow always…it’s pleasure to hear from good human. My warm concern and big respect for you sumit.

        Stay happy and stay safe.

  6. I read it twice thrice to feel the same. The description was so vivid that I could visualise everything what you saw and how you felt.

It is sad to see such things around us, it’s hard to believe that we are here locked in our homes with everything. And at the same time there is someone who is asking for nothing else but water.

Her eyes were glistening indeed. It could be seen in the picture.

Let’s not praise your poem today, you just showed us the ugly truth behind poverty.
But rather praise you because people like you are making a difference by little help that they can do.

Not just that you are proud of yourself, each and everyone here is proud of you.

Take care of yourself while serving the world✨
    I’ll see you around ✨

    1. I remember, I told you what just happened while I was observing everything yesterday morning. The entire day I felt as if something is striking to come out, and when I ignored the entire day for what I was feeling. But I was caught when I went to my usual place, and I had to write.

Thank you Rashmi, for not appreciating the words but for everything that we need to do for our surrounding.

I’ll keep it in the mind
      Your second last line. ✨

      1. I know you don’t do things to come to notice.
But here’s a thing about you, you have a beautiful heart which cannot overlook these things.
And everything you do out of love and humanity will come to you in its best form. You will be rewarded for such gestures in some or the other form…

Nothing goes unnoticed in the eyes of Almighty ✨

      2. Thank you, Miss Awtani.
You never forget to mention that. Never.

Do you read about what has happened in 2015 in one of my oldest posts?
There was this naked woman who had entered in our society. She was mentally imbalanced and nobody wanted to help her.

It’s there, read when you get some time. I really get angry when people become inhumane at times.

      3. I did read about it. Infact I have saved that post with me. I just did not find time to speak to you about it, it went ignored for some or the other reason.

Just one thing I wanna say..
In the people who laugh because you are different, there are ones who smile knowing that you are different and your being different makes sense.

        You are made that way.
You are what best can’t define.
        More strength to you Sumit✨

      4. I was wondering how you’d not read that and here you are, done reading it.

Thank you, Rashmi. I still remember the faces who laughed on me, on that woman, it still gives me fire in my heart when I think about them.

But thank you for consoling me that kindness is above everything.

    How you doing?

So, this is something totally different Sumit. Today, I have seen the magnanimous side of you.
I read your post …I felt each and every line, I felt that little girl through your lines, then I re-read your post and I found the profuse qualities of Sumit.

This is not just a poem, it’s a cruel reality of human suffering that many people refuse to talk about or just ignore it. I really liked the way how you have explained each and every expression of that girl. I can see her gleaming eyes, reflecting from your window sheild and striking in your heart. You gave justice to her smile, by your poem.

You helped her in way..you could do your best. I can imagine that smile that you must have received in exchange. This part of life is called happiness. Humanity and generosity is what you have proven..!!
And I am really very proud of you✨
    Take care Sumit.
    Have a great day ahead..!!

    1. And the loved one is here! Good afternoon, Anushka.
I was missing you after seeing Rashmi’s comment. But I knew you’d be stuck at something.

I read everything what you’ve written and I take all the compliments with an open heart but one thing is there which nobody can deny, kindness and generosity comes from the people you spend your most time with. And you know, you all around me are my source of energy. You, Rashmi, and there are many more. Because of you all, I can raise my voice and do things what my heart asks me to.

So thanks to you for being around, Anushka. We miss you.
